Belo-sur-Mer November

Belo sur Mer is a pleasant Vezo fishermen village located some 80 km south of Morondava. Visitors that come here are greeted by a wonderful kilometer long beach of bright white sands and an amazing transparent sea of emerald waters. But as everywhere on the Western coast of Madagascar bathing can be certainly risky due to the strong tides... Anyhow, you will enjoy the laid back atmosphere, the great red sunsets and the adorable locals that have known to keep the authenticity of an ancestral way of life.
The beloved activity in Belo sur Mer is diving. This site offers great diving excursions that will show you the abundant undersea life of this coast. Reef sharks, turtles, stingrays, barracudas, shellfishes, and even unexpected encounters with humpback whales on their way to their birthing grounds are some of the fascinating experiences of this paradisaical spot of earth.

Belo sur Mer is one of my favourite places in Madagascar. It really is a nice place to stay with a great atmosphere. In November, you may find that you can no longer get to the village overland, as to get to it you have to cross salt flats and in the wet season they’re under water and impassable. In that case, you’ll have to arrange sea transport from Morondava. Probably the most interesting way would be with an outrigger sailing pirogue, though it will be uncomfortable, and you’ll have to bargain hard for a reasonable price. If the salt flats are still passable, you can travel by taxi brousse from Morondava.

You’ll not find the “amazing transparent sea of emerald waters” at Belo itself – on the occasions I’ve been there, the water in the lagoon and in the sea on the other side of the sand bar has tended to be grey. There is also no diving at Belo itself, but the offshore islands are reputed to be completely unspoiled and well worth the effort of getting out to them. You can arrange boat trips out there in the village. I have not seen diving equipment in the village, and I suspect you may have to bring your own. Even if you can find equipment there, the place doesn’t give me the impression that it can maintain stuff to PADI standards.

Another worthwhile thing you can do from Belo, if you can take time off from diving, is to visit Kirindy Mitea National Park (which is not to be confused with Kirindy Forest reserve north of Morondava). The park has spectacular sand dunes, a lake with rare water birds including flamingos, and mangrove lagoons with literally hundreds of flying foxes. During the wet season it is not accessible by road from Belo, but your park guide, who you pick up at the office there, will organise a pirogue to get you to the park.
