Greetings,

I am going to visit Madagascar for the first time arriving at 5th of October and come back at the 26th of October.

I will have one travel companion with me who is (like me) on a low budget.
We cannot afford AirMad flights in the country and our other handicap is that we don't speak French.

Our plan is to go to Toliara as short as possible from Tana (without expensive flight ticket) and check the things there and on the way back to Tana.

We will have a limited time (around 20 days gross) to do this.

Would it be enough?

What is the cheapest and easiest way to travel on the RN7?
As I see there were Madabus and Madasmiles as alternatives to Taxi-brousses, but I think it is no longer available because those web pages are both down.

Every advice is greatly appreciated.

I created a map where I highlighted the interesting places I found:

Suggest strongly that you buy a guide of which the new Bradt is highly recommended. The cheapest, most uncomfortable and interesting way to travel is by taxi brousse. Madabus is long gone. There is a post below about alternatives. You are wise in giving yourself plenty of time.

Wishing you a good trip in a beautiful country.

There is no alternative for you then using taxi brousse. A car with driver will cost you more then flying.

Just be aware that it is very difficult to hop on a taxi brousse soemwhere in the middle. Plan to go in etapes to the bigger town and form there explore the sorroundings. Then book for next day a taxi again...

If you calculate 3 stops on RN 7 south plus some exploration aroundTulear, then 20 days includiung the flight back could be ok. But you wont see all what you planned without own transport.
