Is there something called as "Vignette Touristique Par Nuitees" charged by hotels in Tana? I received a mail from a hotel in Tana stating that above charge is a collected from tourists and paid to Madagascar tourism Board in return. Is it true or does something like such tax exists?

Yes, this is correct. The vignette touristique is levied in Tana and elsewhere. At 1000 ariary per room (not per person) and night, though, it isn't going to break the bank for any tourist.

Thanks friend....I have been told 1500 Ar. per room per night by the hotel and not1000 Ar. as you say....was there a recent hike in tax?

Normaly, hotels already include this tax (about 1% or 2% of their price) in their tariff. If they anounce it after your booking, they want certainly to rise the price. Effectively, there are many other taxes but they don't mention.

Hi,
At my hotel we pay 1000 Ariary for the vignette touristique but we include it in the price of the room since hidden charges tend to annoy our customers.
Cheers,
John

The vignette is always a flat rate, never a percentage of the room price. A hotel or tour operator that tries to persuade you otherwise has their own agenda. 1000 ariary is standard – I’ve never paid more in any town in any class of hotel, and I’ve travelled very widely.

Whether or not a hotel includes it in the tarif quoted depends on the policy of the management, some do, some don’t, but it should always appear as a separate item on the eventual bill.
