20 or more days itinerary in August

I am considering, for example:
1) Tana- Andasibe-Tana flight to Diego Suarez, visit of Ambra Mountain and Ankarana + some days in Nosy Be or other island flight to Ste Marie for the whales (yes, I know that people usually choose or Nosy Be or Ste Marie...).
2) Tana-Andasibe-Tana flight to Tulear, visiting around there, then towards Fort Dauphin and Berenty flight to Ste Marie for the whales.
3) Flight to Tulear, visiting around there, then towards Fort Dauphin and Berenty visiting Isalo on the way + flight to Ste Marie for the whales.
4) canoe down the tsiribinha (only if not too much discomfort at night..), tsingy de Bemaraha, etc.
5) Etc etc...

if you really want to see lemurs, I would advise you to consider going to Ankanin'Nofy as well. You can see lemurs very up close and you get to travel on the Pangalanes channel as a bonus.
So maybe the following:

• Antananarivo - Andasibe - Ankanin'Nofy - Toamasina - continue to Sainte Marie
  Then:
• Antanarivo - Fort Dauphin ( Berenty ) - Antananarivo.
• Do the trip to the Tsingy of Bemaraha. Please note during the trip on the Tsiribihina you can opt to take bigger motorized boats to minimize the discomfort but you will in any case camp at night.
• Finish in Nosy Be.

If your travel compagnon likes wildlife and want to see much possible as lemur i want to suggest you to fly to St Marie first then have some days there , take a boat from here to Sonierana Ivongo then continue by car to Andasibe where you can find largest lemur named Indri Indri and others species then follow the natioonal road 7 to Toliara , visit Ranomafana park before you heading down to Isalo park , don't skip off Anja reserve and you can fly from here to Fort Dauphin then drive to Berenty.
About the Tsiribihina i agree with #2 you can take motor boat it's more comfortable .
About the north , it's interesting but between the south and north is a bit different , south is much interesting if you are keen with wildlife and landscape, cultures as famadihana ( exhumation).

With that amount of time you could do the Tsiribihina river trip and Grand tsingy, ending up in Morondava (one week itinerary). Then go back to Tana and fly to Diego Suarez. Visit the parcs and other sites in this area and end up in Nosy Be (2 weeks extra for this northern part of Madagascar). That's how long it took me do do these areas. However the river trip and Grand tsingy involve camping. In these areas I saw lemurs in Ankarana, Remana beach, Nosy Be, Ambre parc, and the grand tsingy

My only suggestion really is more about personal taste I guess but I would really not bother with Berenty when in Fort Dauphin. I would stay at the WONDERFUL Talinjoo hotel in Fort Dauphin at Libanona Beach http://talinjoo.com/presentation.html , which is owned by the same people who own Air Fort Services and Nahampoana Reserve. Unless you really have a reason for visiting Berenty, you can save a huge amount of money by going to Nahampaoana Reserve instead (8 euros admission). You will see the same animals, up close and personal with ring tails, sifaka and browns (exactly the same combo as Berenty offers) but within 7 km of Fort Dauphin and for much much much less money. You can stay at Nahampaoana, they have some reasonable accommodation there, if you really want, but at only 7 km from Fort Dauphin it makes for a pleasant day trip, then back to the beautiful hotel, which, although really lovely, is not that expensive (70 euros a double). I would do a day trip to the rock pools in Andohahela National Park, at Tsimilahy. We have been sending clients and volunteers there for many years and it is always a spectacular success. Very beautiful spiny forest scenery, huge cool water pools for swimming, lovely picnic spot. Again, just a day trip.
