Hi all

Just wondering how far in advance I should book a Safari. Im aiming to arrive in Nairobi at the middle/end of July, so would it be possible to just turn up and organize something for a few days later, or should I be scouring the Internet and reserving a place somewhere now.

Is approx USD $100 per person per night (including park entry fees) a reasonable price for a budget/camping safari at this time of year, and also if anyone could reccommend any recent tour operators they have had a…

Hi

Can anyone recommend must-dos? Staying just north of Mombasa on the beach (near Malindi I think), but when not lounging, very keen to see local culture - and wildlife of course!

Specifically,

  1. ability to meet actual local people (not just tour guides, waiters etc.) and even help out - happy to donate time, and old clothes, books etc. but without being guilted and seen as a walking wallet! Interested in women's charities e.g. refuges for battered women, schools/ orphanages/ kids…

There are just so many Kenyan & Tanzanian safari companies out there! Is there a travel organization they should be a member that determines whether they're worth looking at? i.e. if a company is a member of this organization than I can be fairly satisfied that they are a quality company.
Is there a website with blacklisted/dodgy companies?

Hello all,

Apologies if I'm repeating an FAQ - I did search, really I did :-). Anyway appealing to those with recent Kenya knowledge/ experience:

Visa - was going to get in London as the last thing I will feel like after an 8 hour flight is standing in a visa queue - but have not got around to it and am out of time, so ...can I get visa on arrival at MOMBASA airport?

I know you can get at Nairobi...but am freaking out that it may be ONLY Nairobi in which case I am fcked, since I go on the 2nd

Hi. I have the choice of going to either Ilkeliani or Tipilikwani Camp near the Talek Gate in the Mara. Both are near the Talek River. Does anyone know which one is better? We are a large group of friends. Also, any pictures or first-hand experiences of both camps would be appreciated. Thanks!

There is quite an army out there pretending to be tourists but in reality being travel agents (the poor and cheap ones). For the newbies here, they are really confusing. And probably a cause for a messed up holiday.

Click that yellow button and report them, its so easy. And they are so darn easy to spot.

Common guys, when are you goign to learn to do a REAL scam? Still looking forward to the next attempt of "Go See Africa" safaris. Its been a couple of weeks. And "All seasons safaris"...must…

Hi, I'm wondering whether I could easily find transport from Mombasa to Moyale without getting back to Nairobi: through Gede, Garissaq, Mado Gashi or the other road to the east, and Wajir. Apart from finding vehicles, can I find accomodation on this route and would you recommend it for the scenery or is it much better to get through Isiolo and Marsabit and have a look at the mountains nearby?

Arriving into Nairobi international airport at 12:45pm oct 10 and am looking to get to Arusha that same day. Are there no direct flight from Nairobi to Arusha?
If so then I'm looking at a suttle bus, what is the earliest time I could catch one from Nairobi international airport?
Will I need I Kenyan transit visa (I'm Australian)?

Is it worth bringing traveller's checks to Kenya? I need a good bit of hard currency to pay for a Mt Kenya climb and Masai Mara trip but I'll be in Uganda and Rwanda for a month prior and am just too paranoid to carry all that cash around. Can operators be paid directly with TCs or do they need to be cashed first? Are they difficult to cash? Are there whopping commissions? What about outside of Nairobi, say in Nanyuki?

Cheers.
