Hi,
So, before I started thinking about a trip to Kenya, I had never given a single thought to wildebeest migration. Now, I feel like I HAVE to witness it. (Ridiculous, I know.) I will be volunteering in Kenya in late July/early August. I would like to do a camping safari in the Maasai Mara either before or after the volunteer piece. If I do it before (which would be easier, logistically), it will be early July. Is this likely to be too early for migration? Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences to share?
Thanks very much,
Alice

Hello Alice and welcome to the Africa page of LP-TT.
Volunteering in Kenya should be a rewarding experience and provide you with an interesting insight into this great country.
Now for the migration, well (and pardon the pun) it's a moveable feast and where it moves to (and the speed) really is dependent upon weather (rainfall during the long rains on the Serengeti) and the amount of feed in the NW of the Serengeti. Generally the migration will cross the Mara River sometime between the middle of August and mid-September, but it can be earlier and also later. I believe there is a website that tracks the progress, but I doubt it would be able to predict movement this far out. Although rainfall reports on the Serengeti during April and May might help with the predictions. Hope this helps.

Alice,
Thanks for your interest in Kenya. From experience, the best time to experience the migration won't be early July, and maybe not late July. Early August is a guarantee. In some cases they start crossing from late July [ but not a guarantee. So if you can be around from early August, the better for you, if not , book late July but NOT early July.
SS.

The Mara river crossing is the highlight of the migration. Whether you get to see it or not is purely a matter of luck and timing. I've done Serengeti/Mara twice in Aug and still haven't managed to see the crossing. Last year, half the wildebeests had already crossed by the second week of Aug.
But to answer your question, July, especially early July, is likely way too early. And where are you volunteering. I'm sure most places aren't so far away that you couldn't go on a weekend.
