Hi guys,

Myself and two friends (all girls) are coming over to join a tour which covers Kenya, Uganda and a bit of gorilla trekking in Rwanda in September. We'll spend the first night in Nairobi ourselves and I just wondered if someone could tell me:

- If it's safer/easier to get taxi's around?

- Where you'd suggest we could go for food and a few beers

Thanks folks,
Jill.

During the day you can walk or take mini buses. After dark, always take a taxi.

A few drinks : Gypsy in Westlands (10mn drive fom dowtown)

You can walk around central Nairobi without much concern during the day time. At night, you'd be advised to use taxis.

For drinks, live music, and a superb outdoor setting, go to Simmers. It's opposite the 680 Hotel in the centre. You can also eat there, for lunch or dinner. The food's not bad at all.

Simmers is a OK place to start a journey in East Africa, Not tourist. The white establishment is located in the Westlands.

If you fly out from Nairobi then I recommend you to end the in Carnivore.

Simmers is very nice, and caters much more the local crowd indeed. Piece of advice : the place is crowded with extremely gifted pickpockets, so beware.
Gypsy indeed will rather be packed with Western expatriates typically working for the UN or Indians.
Carnivore is extremely touristy.

I've heard about pickpockets at Simmers but, touch wood, I've never been 'hit' in the 20 or so times I've been there. Then again, I never go out with much more than Ksh10,000 in my pocket anyway.
