Hi! A friend and I are looking for some walking safaris that are reasonably priced around the aberdare national park area. (rift valley).

Anyone have any recommendations?
We are okay with camping and saving on other luxuries in order to keep the rates low.

Thanks!

The big lodges inside the park can organize walks, but I sense you are looking for a cheaper, out-of-park alternative.

Richard Trillo wrote this Rough Guide snippet about a winding, steep road that descends through the Aberdare Forest. There is no mention of a toll gate and I am unsure whether it is legally in the national park or not. But it seems like what you are looking for:

Perhaps Richard could bring us up to date on this (I am interested too).

Thanks Chris - that link by the way to an old Google Books upload of the 7th (2002) edition isn't working…

I've written the route up again in the last two editions of the Rough Guide (the latest came out in May 2013). It runs between North Kinangop and Gatakaini (northwest of Thika). It's well outside the Aberdare National Park. It's a fantastic route, and great fun, but you do need time.
