Hi All,

I have a question about which Visa to get. We are American citizens and will be doing the following:

15 Jan: Arriving Nairobi
16 Jan: Bus to Arusha
24 Jan: Flight from Zanzibar to Nairobi in the morning(we will leave the airport)
24 Jan: Flight back to USA in the evening.

I read that in an old post that Tanz and Kenya (and Uganda, but that;s beside the point) have an agreement that means you can exit Kenya into Tanzania and return to Kenya without having to buy a new visa if you're within the 3 month validity and you haven't gone out of Tanzania. Is this true, or would we need 2 seperate transit Visas? If we go with a single entry, will we have problems at the airport in Zanzibar, since our visa will have already been used?

Thanks,
Brandon

Jambo - you might be able to get through Kenya with a transit visa but as you will be coming back to Kenya (as you say leaving Nairobi Airport) you might was well get a regular tourist visa - $50 US IF they are still available on arrival. (I saw a post here about 2 or 3 months back that inferred that Kenya was not issuing VOA to citizens of countries where Kenya has established a diplomatic mission (ie Embassy/High Commission/Consulate). They argue (correctly) that you should obtain your visa BEFORE departure). The last time I had to get a transit visa it was $20 US so two TV's is still less than one regular visa.
As for Tanzania you will need the regular tourist visa when you enter at Namanga - again it will cost you $50 US - takes about 30-45 minutes depending upon how many on the bus need visas. Recommend being at the front of the cue with your visa application (download from TZ Immigration page) and the Immigration entry card (its either the blue one or the yellow one - I can never remember which is which). You will not need a second visa to enter Zanzibar however they WILL check that you have a current Yellow Fever vaccination certificate - its one of their pet projects - they (Zanzibar Immigration/Health) consider the mainland of Tanzania and or transiting Kenya as exposure to a YF area and insist on you producing your vaccination card. (Now this was the procedure back in 2012 and I have heard mention of declaring the Eastern part of Tanzania (that is the area east of Lake Victoria) to be YF free, only that part of the country to the west of the lake that ajoins Uganda will still be considered YF "at risk". Maybe do so checks on the UN WHO pages and/or the Tanzanian Immigration pages).
If you return to Kenya without visiting a "third country" outside of the East African Region (Kenya/Tanzania/Uganda) then you will not require an additional Kenyan visa. The Kenyan Immigration Officers will try to tell you that you DO require a new visa - but just stand your ground - they will then very thoroughly check your passport so if you have been to Mozambique/Zambia/D.R. Congo make sure that the arrival and departure dates are clearly evident.
Hope this is helpful and good luck climbing the mountain. Cheers

for Tanzania the visa on arrival cost $50 us dollars.
and for Uganda the visa on Arrival is now $100 us dollars.
the East African visa on Arrival good for Kenya Uganda and Rwanda is still $100 us dollars.
