Do US citizens need to get Kenyan visas before they arrive? The Kenyan government website says yes, but the US State Department website says that you can get them upon arrival in the Nairobi airport. Have any Americans traveled to Kenya recently that bought visas upon arrival?

I'm confused on the correct answer and don't want to arrive empty handed only to be deported...

No chance of deportation! Foreign embassies often want the cash in their hands. The fact is that almost every nationality can get a visa on arrival. Especially Americans. US$50, cash, new notes preferred. It's nothing more than an entry tax.

Have a great trip!

The only reason to get a visa before you leave is if you need a multiple entry visa. It will save money if you plan to enter and exit Kenya frequently. Single and double entry visas are issued on arrival. No need to worry.

I agree with the other two answers. Wanted to add that another reason some opt to get a visa before traveling is simply to avoid the line in Nairobi after a long, tiring flight. Also, I've had them turn down fifty or hundred dollar bills that were older than 2001, so it's really important to bring newer bills.
