Hi all,
Travelling around the world, about to hit Africa (9 months into the trip)...has anyone with Coeliac disease travelled over there? Any tips...how difficult was it to get a gluten free meal?? Been pretty easy everywhere we've been so far...just wondering whether I should stock up on some rice cakes or something before we fly to Nairobi.
On a budget, so won't be able to eat in any 5 star places.
Thanks in advance

It is quite a task to get Gluten diets.
Stock up and you will be good.

Good luck mate

The common local starch food is ugali, made of millet flour. I don't know if that contains gluten or not. You can buy lots of fruit and vegetables and canned fish in the market to supplement your meals. Good luck!

Hmm, I am gluten intolerant and Kenyan food is quite fresh... it's pretty much meat, veg and fruit. For example, you can have fruit for breakfast, meat and veg for lunch and dinner. Ugali is gluten free and is a solid savoury yellowy 'cake' that you eat by dipping into a stew... I guess like casserole. The porridge for is ugee and is good with honey and sugar drizzled on it. I also love nyama choma, which is barbecued meat and mahindi, which is corn. Common veggies cooked are sukumawiki (spinach) and maraghwe (kidney beans). Also Nairobi has a massive Indian minority, so check out Indian restaurants and shops for curries and sweetmeats... yummy.

I don't know if there's much Korean minority left in Nairobi (there used to be a massive minority when my mum was young - her taekwondo teacher was Korean and there used to be a Korean casino), but (dol sot) bi bim bab is gluten free and yum... and so is bul go gi which is cooked meat, kimchi is chilli cabbage and you can also cook your own meat and veg on a little grill... I dug around and found Tokyo Restaurant, and several Korean places here...

Hope this is helpful.
