I am planning an 8 day safari and was hoping to see Masai Mara, Nakuru, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Amboseli. I have been struggling to find a good itinerary with what seems to be a reliable operator. I have been offered the following itinerary for 2440 USD from Kapolondo Expeditions for a camping safari (which I prefer) but I am worried that it might be trying to squeeze too much into too little time. I have been to Masai Mara and Nakuru before but not to the others.

In the end of August, should I just stay in Masai Mara and skip the Serengeti since the migration will be basically over and spend more time in Masai Mara?

I have never been to Ngorongoro but have always wanted to but is it worth adding on the distance and driving time at the expense of game drive time?

Does 2440 USD seem like a reasonable price? They offered 3000 USD with luxury lodges but I prefer the camping and wouldn't mind saving the money.

Any suggestions on operators or itineraries would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!
Amanda

I think you can consider dropping Serengeti and doing Masai Mara because of Migration, you might also want to drop Lake Nakuru since you have been there and flamingos these days are very few there..instead introduce Lake Naivasha and save the US$ 80 park fee. from Naivasha go to Amboseli, then from Amboseli you can drive to Ngorongoro for 2 nights and drive back to Nairobi.
This should save you some money and you will only miss Serengeti in your wish list.

Thank you so much for the advice! I have already been to Lake Navaisha as well. I think I will take your advice though and skip Nakuru and Serengeti and do 8 days of Masai Mara followed by Amboseli and then Ngorongoro which seems much less rushed and much more doable.

Thanks again!

These 8-day Kenya-Tanzania trips are basically road trips. There's no time here to do ANYTHING - absolutely crazy.

8 days Amboseli-Nakuru-Mara-Nairobi is really pushing it. So to include the Serengeti as well is crazy. I mean the very idea of driving from Acacia Campsite, Maasai Mara to Seronera in the Serengeti in one day… Or from Ngorongoro to Amboseli.  Come on! This is ridiculous - East Africa in a cloud of dust.

Slow down, and see far more.

Agree with the people calling this itinerary crazy. Masai Mara to Seronera camp (Serengeti) is a VERY long way, so is the next day of Seronera to Ngorongoro.

By all means visit Serengeti but stay in the north which is where the wildebeest currently are (they're not in kenya yet). Seronera and Ngorongoro really should be a completely separate trip

Just curious, do these itineraries cross the border inside the national park from Mara to Serengeti? I'm using LP East Africa 2012 and it says that border is closed. Have things changed?

The wildebeest have been crossing into Kenya since mid-June. They will go back and forth until about mid-October. You can never predict exactly when they will be where. Especially if you are doing a hit-and-run type safari, don't count on seeing a crossing or count on them being where you are going to be.

As far as I'm aware there still are no border crossings in the National Park. While it is possible to cross the border as there is no fence or other barrier, it is illegal for anyone other than Masai to cross at other than official border crossings.
