Hi-
I just got a chance to visit Kenya for a week in mid May on my way to Namibia using frequent flyer miles. I can stop for free and have never been? Is that a big mistake? Are there places to go where the rain won't ruin things? The place seems very expensive. I was thinking Nukuru and Amboseli and maybe Masai Mara, but could be convinced to go elsewhere because of weather, convenience, or cost. Any advice?

If you have the opportunity do it. When you are there you will be able to organise a safari for around $100 per day. I did one including Masai Mara and Lake Nukuru for 4 days costing $340. I just went to an agency that I saw walking along and the tout was out front. I was travelling alone and was put on with a Indian couple and 2 English girls on their gap year. It was very basic accommodation and food, but saw everything I wanted to see.

Mate, do it if it is free on your frequent flyer miles. See 2 distinct different parts of Africa on your one trip.

We are just back from a trip to Kenya in the rain season (April). We decided to focus on Samburu and did not go to masai mara because of the season. When we were there a number of tourists got stranded in masai mara because of heavy floods. We had very little rain in Samburu (some short showers, mainly in the afternoon) and it did not affect our trip at all. I have posted my pictures of Samburu on my website http://www.withinafrica.com/p846432948 Samburu is located above the equator and hosts a number of species you do not finde elsewere. In my blog on the site you find the day by day trip report of our trip in case you are interested. We also visited Nakuru but there were very few flamingo's around due to the high water levels so it is not the best time of the year to go to Nakuru. Have a great trip

Do it. Even in the rainy season it rains mostly just in the afternoon as a thunder shower. The Samburu idea is a good one but different from the Mara. Lake Nakuru will be OK too though it is much smaller than other parks. With all the world changing so this may be you last chance.

OKAY, WE ARE NOT EXPERIENCING MUCH RAINS AS IT WAS EXPECTED. ITS QUITE SUNNY, AND AM SURE IF YOU CAME TO KENYA, YOU WOULD REALLY ENJOY YOUR TIME. THERE ARE SEVERAL OPTIONS WHILE IN KENYA. YOU CAN DECIDE TO TRAVEL TO MOMBASA TO BASK IN THE WHITE SANDY BEACHES OF MOMBASA, YOU CAN GO TO MT. KENYA, LAKE NAKURU, MAASAI MARA, . SO RIGHT NOW THE WEATHER IS SOMEHOW GOOD FOR TOURISM.
