Medical elective work permit

I am a final year medical student going on my medical elective in april - june in Kenya.

I will be at one hospital for 4 weeks and another for 2 weeks, with 3 weeks travelling time after this.

I understand that a tourist visa will be easy to get hold of at the airport in kenya.

However I am confused as to whether I need a work permit or not.

According to this website http://www.immigration.go.ke/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=89&Itemid=127 I could be class K and need a permit.
However the organisation I am going with have said that because I am not working or being paid I only need a visa.

Does anyone have any experience of this and advice as to how to get hold of a work permit / how to apply and how much it will cost (hopefully don't need to pay the 100,000 per year as given on their immigration website)

Forgive my ignorance but what does 'medical elective' entail?

It's part of our medical school training. It entails spending 6 weeks in a hospital as a medical student, shadowing doctors, and seeing patients under supervision. Does that make sense?

So you wouldn't be doing any actual work, certainly not doing work that could be done by someone else? You will either be watching doctors work or seeing patients in the company of a doctor who otherwise would be seeing the patient him/herself?

Because even unpaid volunteer work (and most volunteer work could be technically be done by a Kenyan) is prohibited under a standard visa. Organisations who use volunteers usually obtain the 5,000/- Class I permit for them..

If you are arranging this through a bona fide organisation you would expect them to know what is required
