Hi,

I wondered if anybody had heard or had experience of the following resorts in Kenya:

  • Lion Hill Resort, Nakuru
  • Karen Blixen Camp, Masai Mara
  • Ol Pejeta, Nanyuki
  • Mount Kenya Safari Club
  • Nairobi Safari Club, Nairobi

I am going there in December, and these are the hotels we have booked through a travel operator. How safe is Nairobi to wander around?

Reviews/comments would be greatly appreciated.

I returned from Kenya this October.

Stayed at the Lion Hill in Nakuru. Nice Lodge, room is a little small, but comfortable. Double bed has mosquito nets. Food is good (typical buffet as other lodges and camps). Nice little veranda in rear of room and can see monkeys there. As for other lodges, ask for room close to reception. Lake Nakuru is different from other parks, especially for the flamingos and other birds in and around the lake. Also good for hippos, close up on white rhinos and gorillas.

Had lunch in the Nairobi Safari Club. Good restaurant and (from the lobby) looks like a modern luxury hotel. It is in the heart of town.

Nairobi is safe in the daytime. It is bustling and the streets are full with people and vehicles (very middle class where you are). As others will tell you (just like other big cities) better safe than sorry at night, unless your ooperator makes the vehicle available (at a cost) for a tour of the city.

Sorry, don't know of the others. Have a great time.

Lion Hill is the best place to stay in Nakuru park.
Mt Kenya Safari Club is old colonial elegance but a little worn. Great grounds and the Animal Orphanage is good too.
Ol Pejeta is in a private game park and quite luxurios. (once owned by Adnan Kashogi!)Great waterhole action and a night game drive there is a must!
Nairobi Safari Club is a modern hotel in a safe area of Nairobi.

Thank you for your responses to my question.

I must bother you with one more query. What is the weather like in Kenya end December, early Jan?
I am flying from Toronto to India, and then to Kenya/Zanzibar, and I really need to know the kind of clothes to pack for this long trip. Does it get cold at nights? Does Kenya (Masai Mara) differ from Zanzibar (proximity to ocean)?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

January is summer in Knya. Daytime temps should be approx 75 to 85 degrees. Temperatures often drop at at night (early morning and late evening0 so you might want to have one sweater, fleece or sweatshirt at most for those times. No need to overpack.
