Avoid Malindi and Mombasa proper. Go to Diani or Tiwi, or maybe Watamu. On the spot, there are outlets for safari - Pollmans seems to have the better deals.
Smallmasterr, its funny how people are different coz I love Malindi town and I would hate to be stuck out in Tiwi or Diani. Mombasa proper is excellent love the place. But if you want secluded Watamu is probably a better bet, best beaches in Kenya. Been a while since I was in Watamu but there always used to be plenty of private houses for rent.
you may want to try reef Hotel - 3* on the beach, tsavo is well accessed from this location and so is Shimba rain forest for game viewing, and easily accessed within a day or so.
