I have booked 2 stays in Tembo Village Resort (Watamu) at booking.com with my credit card. Normally while making a reservation the hotels charge 50% of the expected price directly from my credit card account. This time it didn't happen so. Instead I have received an e-mail in which I am asked to send the deposit in USD to a certain kenyan account of a private person (according to Facebook the person works for Tembo Village Resort). I am totally confused. Any suggestions what shall I do? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

many smaller businesses here in Kenya do not have credit card accounts because of the fees the credit card companies charge them, plus most Kenyans still pay for most things in cash (or by Mpesa, a mobile phone money transfer system).

It is normal for tourists to pay deposits for hotels, safaris, in advance by bank transfer here, and Tembo's own website says 50% deposit should be paid in advance by bank transfer with the remainder paid on arrival.

If you negotiate the transfer using the contact details on their website I would think you will be OK
