Hello all,

next August I'll be visiting this park with some friends, we travel with a truck. The main part of the trip will be in Uganda and Tanzania but we want to have a quick visit to Maasai Mara too. I see that there are several camping site outside the gate (Sekenani gate) but I do not understand if to stay there we still have to pay the park fee(I mean the day that we do not enter the gate of the park) because they are inside the natural reserve. Our idea is to arrive late afternoon and do not make any game drive, the following day it'll be a full day game drive and go back sleep again in same campsite, so I hope we only have to pay 80$ one time (24hrs) and not two times. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Any suggestion for camping (our tend) close to the gate(without need to pay the fee)?
Thanks a lot
cheers
M

Hey @rentonpv No, you would not have to pay the park fees. You pay them upon entry into the park, and you pay for a 24 hour period. So if you arrive in the evening, it makes sense to camp outside the boundaries the first night, but then if you are there multiple days, you will not save money on park fees by staying out of the park, since the pass if for 24 hours. You will save money, because the campsites outside the park are cheaper, and you should really know what you are doing if you decide to camp inside the park. You can check out my article on it here: http://www.nomadic-by-nature.com/camping-with-lions/

Best,

Mike

Thank you Mike for your message! Can you (or other readers) suggest a camping site not far from Sekenani gate but still outside so that we can avoid to pay the fee as you said? we are coming from Nakuru - Narok
Thanks
cheers

Hey Marco,

I live in Nairobi, and these guys are friend's of a friend of mine. I have stopped here for a drink and met them and they seemed very nice and helpful. Note that there are no public campsites outside the park that I am aware of, so you will need to stay in a hostel/campsite like this. Great location, just a few kms from the Gates.
