The Lamu area and that north of the Tana river is declared by the UK government as unsafe. Please advise me what is the current situation ,

Lamu was declared unsafe but it is now very safe. Security has also been beefed up, no need to worry.

If you go to any where on the FCO (Avoid List) you will not be covered by any UK Travel Insurance.

Malindi all the way up past Lamu are on the FCO list of Un safe places.
DO NOT GO.

Well it's true that your insurance won't be valid there, but personally, I'd go anyway. It's my favourite place in Kenya and there's bound to be so much security around Lamu now it's probably the safest place to be on the coast!

Ask around when you get to Malindi, if it sounds at all dodgy to continue by road, you can fly quite cheaply.

Unfortunately kaz, even Malindi is subject to an "advise against all but essential travel" notice from the FCO.

But just a note about insurance: there is no umbilical connection between insurance underwriters and the FCO. It doesn't work like that. Most travel companies, and many insurers, take the view that the simplest practice is to follow the FCO's advice to the letter. But not all. I think you will be able to find travel insurance that would cover you to visit Lamu island. Just ask.

There have no terrorist incidents on Lamu island, and the hotels and guest houses are desperate for visitors. I think it would be a good idea to fly up, though.

Yes, I've just looked at the FCO map and see their no-go area goes all the way down the coast to Watamu, I hadn't realised it was still so extensive since they took Mombasa off the list in the summer.

That's interesting to know about the travel insurance, thanks.
