Hi,
My girlfriend and I are looking to start a safari through Kenya as soon as possible (as early as tomorrow!) and figured we'd give the thorntree a try to see if any others out there are looking to fill their group or to join us. We would prefer a five day or so journey that takes in Lake Nukuru, Maasai Mara, Amboseli etc but we're up for pretty much anything and just keen to get out of Nairobi and see some of Kenya. People are quoting 90 US per day right now if it's just the two of us and we haven't even bothered haggling yet as we figure we could do much better once we get a couple others on board.
So, if anyone is out there and keen to do the same please let us know. I'm 31, Australian and my girlfriend is 23 and American and we're both very laid back and well-travelled.
Cheers

Hi,
I'm planning to be Nairobi end of this month. Can you pass on the Safari tours name who is quoting US$90 per day. I haven't been able to find one that cheap & thats the price range I budgeted for. Good luck in finding partners.
Many thanks

Do you know the park entry fees in Kenya is USD 40 per per person per night?. Do you think the remaining USD 50 will cater for your transport, meals, accomodation, guide, cook, sufficient game drives etc?.
I was in Kenya this year and i had one week to shop around for a tour. Have gone to some of the mid range reputable companies in Nairobi and most of them where quoting USD 100 - 110 joining a group and USD 140 - 150 a private camping safari.
So i dont think you will get the best services with that rate.

As it turns out the 90 a day was for a van of 7 people:) D'oh! Still this seems like pretty much the standard base daily rate for most of the budget safari companies in Nairobi right now. We shopped around and tried a bunch of companies and this was the rate we were given by all of them. We did run into another traveller while we were in Tanzania who had done a similar trip to that which we are planning for 80 a day but he said he was helped by a tout in shopping around and ended up going with New Kenya Lodge and that while it was ok he said the vehicle was a bit sub-standard and they broke down for a little while on one of the days.
I'm not sure whether the entourage of touts that we had following/chasing behind us during the day was aimed at fixing the price at this level (which I think is pretty fair given that the park fees are allegedly 40 a day) but it does add a certain level of annoyance to the whole experience.
I would suggest to anyone that plans on researching companioes once you hit the ground in Nairobi that you respond to all offers for safari suggestion in the streets with "I've already booked with someone" and give them whatever name you like as this tends to have them leave you alone at least for a little while:)
Cheers
