Hi,

I'm planning a trip to Africa in January. This is not my first, I have been to South Africa, Tanzania, Zanzibar and some other countries in North Africa.

I have about 12 days for my trip and i'm debating between Kenya and Zambia. Does anyone have a suggestion on which one to choose ?

I have done a couple of safaris etc ... so won't be my first time in the wild. Looking for something new to explore and discover and afraid Kenya might be similar to Tanzania (Serengeti, Ngoro Ngoro, etc.)

Thanks for your help

Hi

I haven't been to Zambia, but have been to both Kenya and Tanzania.

I think yes, you will find Kenya to similar to your visit to Tanzania. I would choose Zambia based on your requirements of "something new to explore and discover".

All the best

I found Zambia to be boring. I would opt for Kenya. I have been twice and head back next month.

You talk of similarities, but in what sense? Culture? Landscape? Fauna?

My take on Zambia: it is larger and a little more expensive to get around. But the wilderness is purer, and on a scale you just won't find in Kenya at all, or in most of Tanzania except in the Ruaha-Mikumi-Selous corridor.

Kenya definitely has the tribal eye candy, but there is a pushy, pay-me-for-a-photo attitude that only seems to grow.

Budget could also affect your choice, but you didn't mention what you're able to spend.

Chris has points. You are also close to the answer that Kenya might be similar to Tanzania. Its yes about the wild in Serengeti and the Mara. The spotted plains are almost the same, the plain game animals are the same. However, there are other very beautiful places that you could visit in Kenya and go like wow! It depend much on your budget yes! How much time you have and what you looking forward to see in this case.

Thanks all for your feedback so far.

Some clarifications:
- I'm planning to spend 12 days or so during my trip.
- Budget wise, I would say that it is not really an issue and I'm ready to break the piggybank if it is worth it. I will be travelling with mum so can't go too much backpacking, need a minimum of comfort.

If we were to go with Kenya, what are the places worth visiting. Idea is to avoid doing anything too similar to Tanzania.

Many thanks for your feedback.

Hi,

I think when travelling in eastern africa you should think rather in national park vs national park categories than country vs country. Just in kenya you can have so many varieties of different ecosystems and landscape - Mara will be similar to serengatti (but still different) but then you can have places that are totally different - half desert Samburu, isolated Meru, totally out of this world Turkana, Lake Victoria, nakuru, Naivasha, - all this places are unique and not similar to anything you will find in Tanzania.

Tanzania is 50% larger than Kenya and has almost every kind of vista. Mt. Kenya is quite unique, however, and so is most of the country north of a line between Isiolo and Maralal, roughly speaking. Since you need a modicum of comfort, you can always hire a private 4x4 and driver to do northern Kenya.
