Going to East Africa in Oct for 3 weeks. Flying into NBO and out of DAR (want to finish my trip in Zanzibar).
Which country would you recommend for a wildlife safari in Oct and why?
I particularly want to see the big cats.
After this I want to climb either Mt Meru or Kili (or possibly Mt Kenya). How would you compare these mountains for beauty and exhilaration

I would say: Kenya for safari: less crowded and less expensive.
Climbing Mount Kili would take you 7 days.

Have a great time over there.

You can't beat Kenya for a safari.

I recommend doing a safari in Kenya as well. Go to the Masai Mara. October will be too late to see the wildebeest migration, but you'll be there at a good time to see wildflowers and for birdwatching.

As for climbing, Kili is the most famous and "exhilarating" of the ones you listed.

Hi Michneit - I have posted a full answer on the TZ page. But I wish to correct a few things above. The Maria will be less crowded?? This is just BS - the Maria is 1800 square KM, the Serengeti is around 14700 sq-km. I have seen both and the Maria is twice, no at least 4 times as crowded. That said for the period you are going the Maria is more likely to have more big cats and the migration should still be in Kenya. But once its starts raining in North Eastern Serengeti then the animals will start the trek back. Its your choice. Go and enjoy, although a word of caution the roads in Kenya are crap so if you can fly from NBO to the Maria I would recommend it. Rgs Orion_Mike

The Mara is still quite empty as tourists are generally not returning in any massive numbers since the political unrest. I was there last week and a lot of the camps (luxury, mid range and cheap) still have special deals on for October - even with the migration - to try and drum up business.

Agree it's best to fly, roads are terrible.

Definitely Kenya. We saw the 'Big 5', joined 3 cheetah as they made and kill, and found ourselves in the middle of a territory war of 5 lions - very exciting (and slightly terrifying!) I've just posted something about Tipilikwani Mara Camp - really recommend it.

I' d say Tanzania. There is wealth of wildlife right now in the Northern of Tanzania. The serengeti and Manyara National Parks. You just cannot compare the parks with the kenyan ones. Further more the mountains are there still in the Northern Mt Kilimanjaro and Mr Meru. Am always at the Parks with groups and I take pictures and the ones that am posting on my website are just an indication of what I have written.
