Hi all,

I will arrive in Nairobi on the morning of the 13th of Dec and was wondering about what hostel people would recommend?

Iqbal? New Kenya Lodge? Youth hostel?

any recommendations not too far from the centre with reasonable prices and security would be much appreciated!

cheers,
atag

I like the Hotel Africana which is pretty much within the centre of Nairobi (on the same street as Iqbal used to be on). It's not a hostel as such in that you probably won't meet other travellers there but the rooms are clean and reasonably priced (around 700KSh for a single) and it's very convinient for the main attractions within the city centre. It also has good security and is resonably quiet. If you go out at night though it's advisable to take a taxi.

Have a safe trip

Two Caveats:

(1) Keep away from YWCA (South C) - they don't change their sheets after guests have left;

(2) Keep away from touts in this forum who want you to contact them privately - especially when your post just requires general advice... they will most probably lead you up sh*ts creek, and live you high and dry without a boat. They are not going out of their way to help you from the goodness of their hearts.

hi
what kind of amenities would you require for the hostel?

Just make sure you give Nairobi International Youth Hostel a wide berth - I stayed there in July for 4 nights, and for 2 nights there was no running water, the other 2, it was stone cold. I can handle a lot of things, but not showering after about 36 hours travelling was a little hard to take. The long term people at the hostel (students etc) indicated that was pretty normal... People were nice enough, just not the cleanest, and a little way out of town - although I felt comfortable walking by myself during the day. Its on Ralphe Bunche Rd, a couple of ks out of town (was recommended on a number of websites, but unfortunately, soooooo inacurrate - ah well.. the joys of travelling!!)
