You have a choice when choosing a matatu company when leaving Nakuru, heading west.

Please don't use this one: Eldoret Crossroad Kitale (they run Nakuru-Eldoret-Kitale-Bungoma-Malaba)
Not only did the guy try to charge me Ksh500 in the beginning from Nakuru to Eldoret, but when I paid Ksh300 & most others' tickets said Ksh250 (I didn't mention anything at the Nakuru stage, as I thought they may be alighting earlier than me), I took it up with the driver in Eldoret.... He said not everyone could afford the 300 fare. I asked how he determined who could & who couldn't; he ignored me. I visited the booking office in Eldoret for some answers. After taking care of anyone else in the vicinity before answering my queries, the rude worker referred me back to the driver. A second time he ignored me.
For this area of Kenya, which was so affected by the decrease in tourist numbers with the post-election violence, I wish they wouldn't try to cheat the few mzungus who are trying to give this area some tourism shillings. Locals in the area agreed with me on this point, but the office was reluctant to refund my overpayment & ok with me complaining about their service to the travelling community online.
By the way, I highly recommend Mituamba Hotel in Nakuru (LP calls it bare-bones basic, I call it old & bright with loads of character, great staff, & good security) & the Nakuru Coffeehouse, ...& the cheese factory in Eldoret!

Are you sure its called the Mituamba. Coz i stayed in the Gituamba in Nakuru in 1990 and had a ball, big rooms, good staff, disco at weekends, possibly the same gaff. If the LP calls it a bare-bones basic then that is another good reason to go travelling with a "Rough Guide".

Shame about the touts bumping up the fare, thats one thing that gets me down about Kenya. I guess one of the bus companies like Akamba would be a safer bet between these towns.

Tee hee hee.... Gituamba.... one of the 'roughest' joints in town. Used to frequent it in my earlier days when we used to flock down to Nakuru for the Great Rift Valley 10-Aside Rugby tournament.

Hell of a time warding off prostitutes though...

Rooking mzungus is the norm in Kenya whether its bus fares or tomatoes!
