We are going to Kenya in February (Mombasa) and want to book a safari, just not sure if we should book in advance or wait until we are there.

Usually we do everything independently and don't book up things until we arrive in the country but never been to Kenya before.

Prices to book in advance I have range from £390 - £550 ($650 - $900) for 4 days and 3 nights, Tsavo East, Amboselli and Tsavo West - Standard accommodation

Any advice on if this can be done cheaper if booking when you arrive in Mombasa? And is there usually last minute availability on Safaris?

Thanks

With safaris in Kenya you really get what you pay for. The key thing is to have an excellent guide who knows the park you're visiting and its wildlife and can communicate their natural history to you. Then it's down to the kind of lodge or camp (mass market at one extreme, owner-hosted and personal at the other). Booking in advance will usually work out the same price or a little less. Agents and operators make their money from the agreed discounts they get from the property owners. Last-minute special offers tend to be rarer than early booking deals. In either case the same deals are offered to the agents so there's no special advantage in booking direct with the properties or leaving it to the last minute. The best plan is to go with a company, and to places, that others have vouched for and recommended. It's quite easy to end up with a poor deal from an agent (anyone can be an agent) who knows nothing - the kind of company that would currently be selling safaris to Lake Nakuru National Park to see millions of flamingos…

Once you've settled on a good company and a prefered itinerary, whatever you do, know exactly who is guiding you, where you're staying and what your hour by hour itinerary is. And get it all in writing before paying any money.

Caveat emptor!
