Just wondering if anyone had been to Lamu Island recently? I hear great things about it but i also hear alot of comments about security, regarding Somalia.
It is a question that gets asked often on this page. The answer is no, there has been no serious incident of concern to tourists in Lamu since the high profile events two years ago.
Lamu is now much more secure than it was at the time of the the kidnappings in June and October 2011 due to presence of security forces and the fact that the Kenyan army have driven the pirates and Al Shabaab far from their previous bases just over the border in Somali that were used to launch those attacks and forced them right back into a remote last outpost. The UK and US governments have withdrawn their advisories for Lamu and it is very much open for business.

No serious incidents or accidents in Lamu at the moment. A nice place to relax, nice beaches, especially a visit to Shela. Depending on your budget, Peponi is a great hotel to stay at and I think its lime tastes really different, very nice! It is said that when you are going to Peponi, choose your partner carefully, because Peponi was never meant to be wasted..
SS.
I just got back about 2 weeks ago. It was perfect, and almost virtually deserted. Absolutely no security concerns. Right now is the perfect time to go, because soon Kenya will be making it into a major port, which will (sadly) turn it into a major tourist hub. We had the whole gorgeous white sandy beach to ourselves, and were able to get amazing deals on a house, boat trip, etc. Go now if you can.

We are going to Lamu Island & stay at Manda Bay next year. We have no worries about security. From what I've read, the lodges have lots of armed security, and they are very discreet. The Kenyan & US navies supposedly have a base on Lamu Island & the patrol the seas, stopping any suspicious-looking boats.
