I'm doing something similar as aliberat. Does anyone have any experience of African Trails as an overlanding company? They're website looks good, and they seem cheap. I'll be travelling on my own and want to feel safe.

Thanks.

See this thread.

I would avoid them and any other company at the "really cheap" end of the spectrum. These trips are not expensive, for not much extra you can travel with a much better company.

I've used Africa Travel Co a couple of times and thought they were great. Acacia and Oasis are also good. Dragoman gets good reviews but is probably one of the most expensive operators.

thanks Stokeygirl. Oasis are booked up, and Dragoman are too expensive. But I've just looked up Africa Travel Co and they look really good. I thought all these companies were a much of a muchness, which is why it's good to have personal recommendations.

Have you heard bad things about African Trails?

and are the ones your mentioned the "much better companies"?

When you are comparing costs, don't forget to really look into what is and isn't included on an overland trip. Often if you book with a mid-range operator and add most of the inclusions, the costs end up to be the same as a top-end operator anyway.
