Husband and I spent 9 weeks in Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda for gorilla tracking. We did a 5 day masai mara safari and spend about 5 days in Lamu including 2 days where we hired a dhow. In Tanzania we trekked Mt Meru and then a 7 day Kilimanjaro trek before heading to the island of Pemba and finishing up with a couple of days in Zanzibar. I booked the gorilla tracking, safaris and treks before arriving in east Africa as I didn't want to waste any time organising it whilst on our trip. We also organised private safaris using fly camps or permanent tented camps. We had only one night in a lodge whilst on safari and that wasn't nearly as interesting as the camps. Happy to provide details if you wish.

Gorilla trekking is a bit tricky you have to pay the park fees in advance. They charge about $500 i think there are guides there all you need is find your way.You can go to Maasai Mara for the hot air ballon safari the proceed to Kili for the hike.Ive done Machame route up to Uhuru peak. Its fun!! i used ...something Laibon safaris.they provide you with all the climbing gear even boots but returnable.Ask for a guide called Njenga.Serengeti and Mara are almost the same they are just devided by the Kenya/Tanzania boarder.
About DRC and Burindi am not sure if you need a visa.Apart from Scandnavian there are other buses that go to Uganda-Eldoret Express,Easy Coach-You jus go to their booking office and pay.
Security so far is good but you need your own travel insurance or give details of a relative should something happen to you when you are travelling

Awesome! I did some research on the hot air ballon rides and though their pretty pricey, it's a once in a lifetime experience.

Is there a consensus on whether to safari in Tanzania or Kenya?

I neglected to mention that we also did a 7 day safari of the Serengeti, Tarangire, Ngorongo as well as the 5 day Mara safari. I thought that the 2 experiences were very different and would have regretted limiting myself to just one of them. Tarangire was particularly brilliant for elephants and we also saw wild dogs there. With the Serengeti trek we also did a 2 hour walk to the Olduvai Gorge with 2 masai. That was pretty interesting - seeing elephants, giraffe and other animals whilst walking rather than from a jeep.

?

Kenya will be much cheaper and much less touristy.
