Hi!

We are arriving in Accra tomorrow and will be staying for around a week. We have friends staying somewhere in East Legon and want to stay near to them as I hear getting around Accra can take a while. Any suggestions for somewhere cheap? Alternatively, any suggestiions for somewhere fancy for a Christmas treat?

THANKS!

M

Hello everyone,

I have to spend a week working in Accra (Legon) and then have the weekend free before my lift back to Benin. Any suggestions? I liked the recent comments about Busua and the Hideout Lodge, but would that involve wasting serious amounts of time getting there and back?

(Oh: the colleague giving me a lift will be driving back from Abidjan. It would be great if I could find somewhere on his route, so that he could pick me up rather than me having to travel back to Accra to meet…

From the guidebook (Bradt's, the only single country guidebook available on Ghana) description, I expected Busua to be a pretty cool place, just barely convincing myself to stay in Butre at the excellent Hideout Lodge a few kilometers up the beach. One morning I hiked through the jungle and up the beach to have a look. Busua may have been cool in 1979. But it now it barely merits a day trip. I was the only guy there with long hair. No rastas, white or black. It's a not very appealing African…

Before you buy that plane ticket to Ghana, bear in mind the difficulty of breaking into the country if you're a Western tourist. No visas at the airport or borders. You need, not one, but two letters of invitation from Ghanaians! The good news is they will accept emails. You also need a round trip air ticket (if you're flying) and be ready to leave your passports with the embassy for two weeks. I'm a US citizen and my girlfriend is EU. Same deal for both of us. Fortunately my girlfriend had a…

My Bradt guide to Ghana (the only single country guide I believe you can get for Ghana) recommended the Ampax and Mavis hotels in Accra, saying they were clean and about $8/night. So, I got to Ampax, it was clean but they wanted $40/night for the room (this turned out to be a trend, not only in Ghana but also Togo and Benin). Shocked, and fortunately with a helpful Ghanaian acquaintance, we discovered that there was an older Ampax a couple of blocks away. Went there. They had a barely tolerable…

Just came back from a couple weeks in Ghana. Surprisingly, it was very disadvantageous having small denomination US dollars. Everybody gave a terrible exchange rate for anything less than a $20; $100s are preferred for the best exchange rate. People want Ghanaian CEDIs, not foreign money for payment. Only if you are willing to take a really bad exchange rate does payment in dollars or euros become interesting. Also, most people will not accept older dollars, only the 21st century multi-color…

Came back from Ghana (+Togo & Benin) in mid-November. The Hideout Lodge was the cheapest and the best place we stayed. Almost paradise! They have a range of accomodation and prices, from tents to treehouses to bungalows with nice private bathrooms and verandas. Food was good and reasonably priced (especially recommend red red, coconut curry and banana pancakes). Friendly staff. Small number of guests creates an easily friendly atmosphere. Near perfect beach. Between two African villages. Highly…
