Accra itself is a party town. Lots of people at the Labadi Beach in weekends when there is live music. A good place for you to stay could be Rising Phoenix http://magicbeachresort.com/ Haven't stayed there but took a look one afternoon on a walk and it looked pretty good but is in a very poor and dark neighbourhood.

Kokrobite appeals to a lot of backpackers with Big Milly's a the place to stay http://www.bigmilly.com/ Never been closer than the coastal road; I'm too old for that...

Cape Coast also sees a lot of tourists and most backpackers (they're like friggin' lemmings!) hang out at Oasis Beach Resort at night.

Busua is nice but was more chill than party in November 2010. It does see a good deal of lemmings though, and they met Black Star in the evening where there usually was bonfire and what-not.

Travel safe and have fun.

I think that a lot of backpackers in Accra tend to hang out in Osu--not for lodging but for eating and shopping, though there is lodging on the beachfront called Akuma Village near the Artisanal market (which is near the big arch) which has the reputation for that type of thing. I've never been.

I also second what #1 said about Kokrobite. I've been there and Big Milly's is the essence of the laid back, party scene in Ghana.

I also agree that Busua beach would also give you much what you are looking for in terms of enough backpackers to create a "backpackers' scene", with several budget choices.

The Rising Phoenix and Akuma Village are the same place. I'd definitely recommend it as somewhere thats a chilled out party and a good mix of locals and backpackers. You can also stay there - very cheap, great views over the sea and really nice vegetarian food.Just a bit of a horrible area. Just down from there is another place called Osekan Resort which is also very cool.

Not sure I completely agree with unclesummer - your not going to find many locals in bellaroma, monsoon, duplex or jokers, unless its the kind you pay for sadly. They are almost complete ex pat places, ok if your into that kind of thing but not if you want a mix of people and to see a bit of local life. Getting chatting to a local at your hotel and they will take you to any one of a million bars, nightclubs, chop bars throughout the city - you maybe the only non local but you'll have a fantastic time and see a bit more of the real Ghana than if you just do the expat places (Monsoon's sushi makes it well worth a visit though!)

Accra is very much a party city, people regularly are out until 5am or later so ask around and people will tell you the most happening places at that moment in time. It does change quite often as new places open up.

Big Milly's is great and would probably be perfect for what you want. If you fancy seeing a bit of the coast line, head over to Busua - but if you want backpacker prices, stay at one of the small places there in Dixcove and just party at the Busua Beach hotel during the day. If you don't want to go quite as far, Oasis in Cape Coast is the standard backpacker party place, bang in the middle of town, on the beach and great views of the castle.
