Hi,
I'm thinking of going to Ghana from mid-Sept to mid-Oct, which the guidebook that I have currently describes as the rainy season, without any more detail. How is Ghana during this period? Is it raining all day or just for short periods? What is the effect on roads and travelling eg. mud? Is cycling possible? Is it a good idea to go still?

Usually short-ish periods, sometimes very intensely. There can be floods, but the rainy season is ending around this time, so your odds are pretty good. It's actually my favorite time in Ghana, since in mid-September the weather can be less-than-brutally hot; by mid-October the heat is usually back to normal.

I'd not hesitate to travel on pavement, but I'd stay flexible for dirt or gravel (i.e., mud) roads.

Hope that helps.

It depends on where you want to go - the south and the coast do have a rainy season around that time, but it is much milder than in May / June. In the north you won't get any rains around this time.

As Mark has said, it shouldn't stop you from travelling, and could actually make it more bearable!

Cycling - hmmm, depends on where you are looking to cycle!

Best of luck and enjoy..

Yes, there will be mud one some routes, but you just have to take it day by day. Be flexible about the routes you take and ask people about the road conditions. I organise cycling tours in Ghana and can put you in touch with people to provide bikes or advise on routes. More at http://www.ghana-tours-travel.com/tours/cycling-tour/
