blackberry77, you and your friend desperately need a guide book - Bradt is considered the best and I believe that all your questions are covered there.

Sammo's Guesthouse in Cape Coast is a good choice together with Amkred just behind it. Tro-tros for Takoradi leave at the very near roundabout if I remember correctly.

Not in the guide - a cheap place to eat in Cape: walk from Sammo towards Oasis (good place to hang out and meet other travelers) and it's the last food shack on the right side before Oasis. They only serve rice and chicken with veggie sauce (makes it easy to choose haha) but that sauce is worth killing for! They were open in the afternoon and night 2 years ago.

Also the Ford Fast car station in Cape Coast is right by the Sammo Guest house at the roundabout. Ask for the 'Ford station'.

blackberry77, once you have settled in Mpraeso I hope you will find time to research the area for potential tourists since there is very little in Bradt. I drove through in 2010 and found the 'highland area' very beautiful.

Please write about it here and also in http://bradtghanaupdate.wordpress.com/

Totally agree.. Kumasi stayed at Traveler Lodge across from bus station. Was small room but very cheap. Cape Coast stayed in Mighty Victory which was 35 cedis a night but great place. If Busua, dadson's lodge was great.
side note, wanted to mention that if you stay in accra, avoid savannah's guest house. My ipod, 50 ghc and flash drive were stolen from my room there.

My last time I travelled to Ghana, I was adviced to book Planters Lodge in Takoradi, the hotel was nice but it was too expensive. I was adviced to try Abuesi Beach Resort just about 15 to 20 minutes from Takoradi. If you are travelling from Accra you need not to reach Takoradi before Abuesi Beach Resort. At Shama junction take taxi from there and the taxi drivers shall take you there, it does not cost so much. Ghana is very cheap. If you are a swim lover Abuesi Beach waters are very calm. The community has engaged people to clean the beach every morning. The manageress could arrange a day tour to Kakum National Park, and Cape Coast Castle. A day tour also to Nzulesu, Water on stilt. If really you want to relax, I could tip Abuesi Beach Resort, because of the enviroment and vegetation. www.abuesibeachresort.com

It's called VIP bus,has a good reputation at the moment costs 15GhC from Accra to Takoradi in air-con comfort

Worth looking into!
