Thank you all for your frank posts about Ghana.
After reading all the responses. We have decided to stay with family in Capecoast.
My question is, are there grocery stores there that we can buy bottle water, food the kids, baby food, and any kind of foreign foods for my husband, since my hubby and kids are not from ghana.

-also what is the estimated drive from accra to capecoast on a weekday mornning at 9am?
many thanks again.

How long it will take to get to Cape Coast from Accra depends on where you are in Accra. If you are in Osu or Airport or East Legon it will take you 30-45 minutes to get across Accra. From western Accra (Mallam junction) it should be no more than 2.5 hours maximum--maybe less than 2 hours if there is little traffic.

Stuff that you really have to have and which are things that only tourists (or non-Ghanaians) would need--you are better off finding it in Accra in Osu at the Koala(?) supermarket or the Shoprite in the Accra Mall at Tetteh Quarshie interchange in East Legon.

If you are after "western" food and by that I mean snacks, cereals, diet coke etc in Cape Coast I'd suggest stocking up at the Koala Supermarket in Osu in Accra before you go, they have pretty much everything.

You won't have any problem in Cape Coast though when it comes to water and western basics - I was there for more than 2 months and I wanted for nothing. The Castle Restaurant next to the Castle has very good western food and the owners and staff are the loveliest people... if you are after a burger and chips/fries go down there. Though I bet after a few weeks you'll be at local places :)

You'll have the best time, Cape Coast is fabulous.

The Shell Service Station before Elmina Junction on the highway about 10 minutes out of Cape towards T'di has more 'western' food (corn chips!) than anywhere else in Cape Coast. And, if you go, visit the best hidden food spot in the area, Elimax: http://gisforghana.blogspot.com/search/label/Favourite%20Secret%20Food%20Spots%20in%20Ghana Anyway, hope it's a great trip. All the best, Gayle.
