I've searched this subject and haven't found anything specific enough or recent on the forum here.

Am coming to Accra in September and will be staying the first night at the Afia African Village Hotel, which is I believe near the Osu district but on the beach. Address is 2 Liberia Road Extension. The hotel website says it can arrange airport transfer for $14, but I read a traveler's experience on another forum that said all they did was call a taxi and the taxi wanted to charge much more than the hotel's airport transfer fee.

So the hotel transfer service is essentially nonexistent, and I don't know how long they have had that $14 fee posted on their website. I'll just get a taxi myself from the airport.

Can anyone who has done this recently, i.e, within the past six months or so, tell me what is a reasonable taxi fare for this trip? I understand they will try to greatly overcharge the obruni at first, and I don't mind bargaining. I lived in Togo for two years and got very used to it. I just need to know what a reasonable price is. Thanks!

LP says anything under US$4.40 is fair, which is around 7-8 Cedi. I paid 6 Cedi from Asylum Down back to the airport but you might pay a little more on the airport side (or have to bargain harder).

I have not taken a taxi in Accra for some time, but No 1 sounds about right. Just before you come out of the airport building you may be accosted by hire car drivers. A much cheaper option should be to exit arrivals and then climb to the street above, which is where arrivals are dropped. You will very soon get a taxi here. Most Accra taxi drivers are very ignorant about hotels and road names, and yours will probably have no idea where you hotel is. Tell him to go to ministries area and then use the map on your hotel web site.

The drivers most likely won't know where the hotel is, and I, the person who hasn't been there before, will have to guide them with a map. That's a hoot! Makes the almost nonexistent hotel transfer service sound more appealing.

Thanks for the replies, they were helpful.

Another option is to hire a tour operator to be waiting for you to provide your transport. You get a clean, private vehicle with air conditioning and a knowledgeable driver/guide. They would ensure that you are properly checked in to your hotel, and if they seem good to you, then they would be easily available for a guided tour of Accra or other places in Ghana.

Easy Track Ghana is a company in Accra that provides such airport transit for $20 USD.

The Easy Track website says they charge $25 for airport pickup, but that's useful to know. It's the same price as Jolinaiko Eco Tours charges, which is the company I'm touring with. Guess I'll take the easy way this time and have them pick me up.

Have you made it to Accra yet? The Afia is a lovely hotel right on the beach. Not many beach hotels are nice in Accra. You need to get away from the city for good beaches. The hotel is within walking distance of Independence Square.

Yes, Easy Track Ghana recently raised their airport transit rates. Cost of parking, airport licenses, always going up...bla bla bla. But it is hassle free - they are there with a cold beverage for you and a nicely air conditioned private 4X4. No haggling. No stress. Directly to your destination.

Easy Track also has a great program called the "One Extra Bag" program , where they provide free airport pick-up if you are bringing an extra bag of charitable donations: Medicine, school supplies, children soccer gear.

If you do decide to haggle with a taxi driver at the airport, here are a couple tips:
1) DO NOT get into the taxi until a price has been agreed upon
2) BE CERTAIN that the driver knows where your destination is located
3) Basically anything from the ariport to central Accra will be about $15.

There are more tips like this on the Easy Track site.

HAVE A GREAT TIME IN GHANA !!

Back from Ghana. I used the Afia Villages Beach Hotel airport pickup, and there was no problem. Nice hotel, and everyone on the staff was very helpful and friendly.

Jolinaiko Eco Tours was also very good. Had a great time! Blogging about the trip, with loads of photos, at http://ghanatravels.wordpress.com.
