Hello fellow travelers. I am planning a trip to Accra, Ghana this November, and I am somewhat concerned about personal security. Does anyone know how it is for a foreigner to walk around on the streets? Are there a lot of robberies?
Thanks in advance to anyone taking the time to respond

Probably safer than many US or European countries! Just don't flash wealth & be more aware at night

If you asked the same question two years ago, I would've told you that Accra is very safe, and you had nothing to worry about. The past year, crime has increased, both in number and in brutality. We experience a growing number of armed robberies, both attacking private houses and also targeting people in public places at night. This is no longer a problem limited to the "rough" parts of town, Newtown, Nima, etc.....but it's also really affecting the upmarket areas, like East Legon and Airport Res.

You should be careful after sunset, and I advice you to take taxis rather than walking around at night.

During the daytime, you should be aware of your pockets at crowded places, where they can easily be picked. Nkwame Nkrumah Circle is probably the worst area when it comes to this.

Enjoy Ghana :)

I've been seeing the trend in the news as well (viz. 8 armed robbers killed by police last month), but crime still seems very low compared to the US such as Atlanta where I was living. In any case my expat friends who live in Accra don't seem too worried about crime.

Let me limit myself to the areas of Accra I know well-- Accra central (Makola area), James Town, Ussher Town (the oldest parts of Accra), Korle, and Mamprobi. I walked thru all these neighborhoods almost every day/evening while there in July and on previous trips. No one will bother you except maybe friendly shouts of Obroni or Blorfunio (white person in Twi and Ga). A main reason they are safe is that these are neighborhoods where robbers and muggers will get lynched by a crowd if they are caught--and there are always lots of people out in the streets making escape unlikely for a would-be armed robber.

We never had any problems walking around in Accra in the day or night. Of course, there are ok and not-so-ok parts of the city, just like anywhere else. And so, I would take the same precautions that you would in any large city in the US. Have fun...you'll love Ghana!
