I'm planning a trip to Ghana in December\January. As I'm a keen hobby photographer, I'd like to know how big the problem of harmattan is in that particular time (especially in connection with photography). How "foggy" is the atmosphere? Is it really possible not see the sun continuously for few days?

I've been to Ghana during those months and did not experience any issues from the Harmattan. Now the humidity--that's a different story!

Further north in Mali there was a definite haze in the air which could be a problem for landscape photography. I still got some great landscape shots though--the dust in the air hurts resolution buts produces a nice color-blending effect. Sunrises and sunsets were also spectacular.

I highly recommend a Pelican case for keeping your camera equipment safe from the elements.

For more advice, post this on the photo branch.

Peace,

BB

Just to round out the answers:

I've also been in Ghana during those months, and on some occasions I had no problems but on others the haze was quite thick. Once, nearly all flights were canceled out of Accra because visibility didn't meet minimum standards. I've also seen variation along the coast, with bad visibility in one area but not another. As BigBri says, further north is worse.

So the answer to your question is a resounding "maybe."

Hope that helps.
