Hi everyone
I shall be in Ghana in about a week and a halfs time arriving in accra late afternoon and staying for 12 nights.I'm beside myself with excitement but also a little aprehensive as its my first visit to Africa.I have travelled to other parts of the world before(South and Central America quite extensively)so I'm not a total newbie.I was just looking for a few pointers:-

1 what route/itinery would you suggest in order to see the most possible without getting "too" stressed out in terms of time etc.Any recomendations of accommodation and things not to be missed would be helpful.I originally wanted to go to Mole national Park, but fear that this is likely to take up much of my time. What do you think?

2 My second queston is the perenial one regarding safety. As I'm travelling alone I'm interested to hear how other folks have managed when it comes to nipping out to a restaurant or bar after dark?Any tips?

Thanks very much and all the best

Dave

I was there solo in 07. Mole is a pretty good take. Figure a day by bus from Accra, 2 nights at the park and off to your next spot. It ain't the Serengeti but it's cheap and very laid back, be careful of the monkeys around the pool, they WILL take your wallet. The food there is good to. Cape Coast is also nice. I stayed at the little hut colony just West of the fort (the name escapes me now) not fancy but hey for 16 USD a night you get the surf breaking 30 feet from your door and there's a restaurant, bar and sometimes entertainment. The tour of the castle is worth your time. Safety was never really a problem. I felt real uncomfortable in Jamestown, down by the light house in Accra, just a bad vibe, and I got ripped off at the bus station in Accra but that was my fault. I was warned by a guard and I was careless. Just pay attention to what is going on around you and don't trust someone just because they are the same color you are.
Enjoy

It depends on where you start from. Assuming Accra, you could if you flew to Tamale and got the afternoon bus to Mole. It would be one very long day if you took the bus from Accra (12 HR) then the bus to Mole (4HR). There is only 1 bus from Tamale to Mole and it leaves in the middle of the afternoon.

I went from Accra to Nzulezu, up to Mole then all the way north to Sirigu village (near Navrongo) and back in ten days (September 2009). But I used a tour company and had a hired 4 wheel drive and driver so I could see and do the most in the short time I was there. It was worth every penny.

If you like wilderness and wildlife, you should go to Mole. It's better for wildlife viewing in the dry season. I visited in the rainy season (September). Didn't see many animals, but I still was glad I went. There were plenty of interesting sights along the way.

If you do go to Mole, you might also be able to see the hippos at Wechiau (sort of in the Wa area). Also better in the dry season.

"what route/itinery would you suggest in order to see the most possible without getting "too" stressed out in terms of time etc."

You'd have to give us a hint as to what you're interested in: beaches, wildlife, castles, handicrafts, festivals.

As far as your time constraints, you'll be able to see a lot more if you hire a 4 wheel drive and a driver. Taking public transportation will take a huge chunk out of your time. If you have to take public transportation because of budget constraints, you should mention it so people can give you relevant advice.
