Hi
I am a 46 year old woman who plans to travel abroad for the first time in December. I'd planning to go to Ghana. I will be travelling alone. I am as excited as I am intimidated by this. Please give me any advice for a first time female traveler going it alone.

thanks

Hi, I spent 5 months travelling and working in Ghana, and not once did i feel unsafe. I found it to be a charming country, maybe not so dynamic as some other African countries when it comes to scenery but the people really were the most friendly and welcoming people i have ever had the pleasure to meet. I was by myself most of the time, local buses and tro tros and again never once had a problem. Also paid local prices (most of the time)which was one of the few countries i visited which did not have the foreigner price V local price. I spent most my time in Kumasi which was very safe although night time walks around town by yourself are not recommended. But visited the volta region, coastal areas and the north, all good. Accra has to be the most difficult city to get around due to the traffic, some great resturants etc eg in Osu Venus does great lebenes food and good bar, also mama mia if your missing a great pizza. I have not doubt that you will enjoy it, your worst enemy will be the transport/road accidents rather than crime related. Safe travels.

Get yourself a copy of the Bradt Guide to Ghana. It'll be very useful.

Ghana is a great choice. I'm also a woman who travels alone, and I'm a decade older than you.

I just got back from a three week trip there. I'm blogging about it at http://ghanatravels.wordpress.com

I could tell you loads of stuff, but it would take pages. Feel free to pm me.

You'll have a great time!

Hi there. You'll be absolutely fine most of the time. I just did a long post on what I feel are the more serious dangers living and travelling here at http://gisforghana.blogspot.com Overall, as I wrote, feel safe almost 100% of the time. Much more than I've felt in many other countries. All the best,
Gayle.

Ghana is safe. Dont worry at all you will enjoy it. I have been living there for almost 5 years and moved sometimes alone day and night and never something bad happened to me. If you like to relax on the beach one day not far from Accra go to Big Milly in Kokrobite - there you will meet a lot of travellers and you will love the place- good food - Wendy and Seto the owner take good care of this place - just a recommendation but of course lots more to see and explore in Ghana. Have fun. Website: www.bigmilly.com
