Hello,

I am a Canadian currently traveling for a year. I couldn't get my visa for Ghana before leaving home since it is only valid for three months. Does anyone know for sure if the high commission in London will issue me a visa? I have heard they will do it for foreign nationals living in the U.K. But what about passing through? I have heard conflicting information. If I need to fly home all my plans change, any help would be appreciated. -Amy.

You have to apply online now, you can then either send your passport to them or get an appointment.

No idea whether it'll be possible after all the problems in W.Africa .. but worth a try

A friend tried about 10times to fill in the online form, beware it crashes constantly!

Even though they have this online system now you should still be able to show up at any consulate in the world and they will help you. Issues in other countries in West Africa should in no way hinder your travels to Ghana. Ghana is very peaceful and happy to have guests from all over the world.

#2 - That's very wrong since 1st Jan; the system has changed!

#3 Noted but what is is asking is a little different than the typical UK citizen trying to get a Visa in the UK to Ghana. That is why I would still suggest that he visit or contact the high commission for this matter or even the one back in Canada. And just becasue it is required that you do it online now in the UK does not mean that it is the same everwhere (still mail in here in the US). He said he was traveling for a year and I assume will probably be in other countries other than the UK where doing it in person would be the best way to do it.

It also sounds like lots of people are having issues with the online system so giving people potential alternatives could be helpful (especially if they are not UK citizens).

Hey amspumkin, I'm just wondering what luck you had... as a kiwi whose been away for 5 months I had the same issue! Spent 2 hours in the Nigerian High Commission here in London before they told me that as a non-UK resident they couldn't process my application. So off to Canberra my passport goes, and I miss out on Burkina Faso and probably Mali because my passport won't be back in time :(

Praying I'm not going to have to somehow get one West African embassy to mail FedEx my passport to another while I twiddle my thumbs in London!!!!

#5 - You can pick up both Burkina & Malian visas in W.Africa easily, Ghana is the main problem at the moment, just hope the others don't follow suit

Oh the issue isn't getting the visas for Mali & Burkina Faso, I was planning on getting those in Bamako (arriving on 5 day visa, converting to 30 day in Bamako), the issue is that by the time I get my passport back from the Nigerian embassy in Canberra I won't have time to go to those places (unfortunately I can't extend my deadline to go home & have already booked & paid for a tour through Cameroon, Nigeria, Benin, Togo & Ghana)

Sorry if it wasn't clear, but my question relates to the original post - is it possible for a non-UK resident to get a visa for Ghana in London? Or am I going to have to get that visa at the embassy/consulate in Australia (which services New Zealand, my country of citizenship)?

I am extremely curious to hear from amspumkin!

  1. Why are you getting your Nigerian visa outside W.Africa??
  2. Ghana - is something I am trying to put pressure on the govt. to change their ideas; am awaiting results. BUT the situation at the moment is that unless you have a valid reason (& ideally a UK resident) I doubt it. Personally I would make an appointment at the visa section via the UK website & plead your case

Hi Kira,

  1. Because the Thorn Tree forum and other sites are full of people being rejected from Nigerian embassies in places where they aren't residents! At the High Commission in London they were absolutely adamant that Canberra was the only place in the world I could get my visa, calling other employees over to prove it when I was sceptical!

Do you know anywhere where it is possible to definitely get a Nigerian visa in West Africa?! Seems they're being very strict with their "only residents" policy. Also, I will be on an overland tour, so I won't have the flexibility to hang around in a certain city for a while if need be, and Cameroon is the only country I am definitely going to before then (where the trip starts).

  1. I've filled out the online form and got an appointment at the Ghana High Commission in London next Monday, but after trying to reason and then eventually bursting into tears at the Nigerian High Commission, I don't know how good my chances are at convincing them, if it's not their policy! The longer I wait, the longer til I can send my passport to Canberra, get it back and be off to Africa!

Good luck with your lobbying! It saddens me that these West African nations are losing foreign dollars by making it prohibitively difficult for us to visit.
