Could some kind person please let me know what it costs to travel between Accra and Cape Coast, and any other advice on making the journey. Economy and speed are important, comfort is not.

you can get from Accra to Cape Coast for less than $5 USD on a direct bus or trotro. It's only about a 2.5 hour trip. The STC bus will probably be the best option though it has a set schedule for departures, whereas trotros leave all the time with no set schedule.

Yep, it's about 5 Cedis. STC virtually never leave on time. You can always opt for a Takoradi STC if it turns up before a CC one, but you do have to pay the whole T'di cost, which is probably more like 8 Cedis. Alternatively, you can get a T'di or CC fast car from just outside Kaneshi market--they're the nice, new looking Trotros, which leave fairly quickly, for about 5-8 Cedis too.
