I am going to Ethiopia for a week in June for work and would like to know how to get a local SIM card without going through a company called RedZebra which is what I did when I was there in January.

RedZebra provided me with a SIM card, which worked OK, but it was expensive (around 40 dollars for one month) and they disappeared the last day of my stay in Addis (they didn't answer my calls or texts), when I was supposed to return the SIM card and get back by 12 dollar deposit. I then figured…

Hi

A friend and I will be in Ethiopia for a week in May.

We're acutely aware that a week is no way near enough time, but we're very excited about being in Ethiopia and keen to get as much out of the experience as possible.

Ideally we'd like to do a trek and take in a few of the historical sights in the north (perhaps Lalibel and Gondor). We thought about doing the TESFA trek but we're thinking we probably don't have time and should do a couple of days in the Simiens mountains instead.

I'd…

The following link lists the SELAM BUS prices of the routes from Addis to various places within Ethiopia:

http://www.selambus.com/selam/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=35&Itemid=59

These seemingly comfortable busses appear to be a good alternative to the pricey flights. Apparently it is possible to book online though I havn't tried myself. Unfortunatly, there does do seem to be a schedule.

Sky Bus are a bit more expensive and, theoretically, there is a schedule online but it does…

Does anyone know if there are car ferries between Jemen (Al Mukha) and Iritrea (Aseb/Assab)?

Also, is it 'safe' to travel into Ethiopia from Aseb/Assab?

We're travelling by 4wd van overland...

thanks!

I am planning to travel a bit in may/ june. Anyone interested in sharing a 4 WD?
One trip would be to visit the omo valley.
Another to Harar (and perhaps Awash National Park).

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi, I am off to Ethiopia in a bit and thought it sensible to have some local currency on me when i arrive. I realise theres a bank in Bole airport (where I'm flying to) but I would like to have enough for a taxi ride in case something happens to goes wrong with the bank- it has a reuptation of being unmanned during the early hours of the morning.

I am in the UK and have been told you cannot buy Birr here and was advised to take american dolllars and change them when I get there which doesn't…

Hello guys,

my question:

I´ve got a ca. 6 hour "stopover" in Addis Ababa on my way to Uganda. Is it possible and worth to make a short visit to downtown Addis Ababa in this time, and how about a "transit visa" there??

Thx for your posts!

Does anyone have any experience with riding on Izuzu trucks in the Omo valley. I know it was possible to travel by trucks in the pass without problems but I heard that a new rule forbade this, particularly around Omorate.
Thanks

Are the Xmas celebrations in Ethiopia something very special to stay there for? Any good locations for the festivities?
