During our visit to Ethiopia, we decided to spend our three weeks in the northern part of the country only. Initially, our approach was that we can go for another trip next time and visit the south. Now, the more I read the more I feel discouraged, especially by articles like this.
Would appreciate your views. Thanks

Apologies for such a common query but a search reveals nothing recent.

Please can you tell me whether I can get a visa upon arrival flying into Addis? Will they ask for a ticket out or anything else? I'm thinking about flying in from Dubai on a British passport.

I would then intend leaving overland into Kenya. Has anyone done this recently who can advise whether its considered safe enough at the moment? And can you get a Kenyan visa at the border?

Many thanks for your replies, happy travels

Hi all!

So a friend and I are planning a year long motorbike trip, I'm very excited!
We are still in the beginning stages of planning, and still discussing the route.

Anyway, currently we are battling with linking Ethiopia to Egypt due to current affairs in many central african countries.
Well, here come my questions:

  1. Would it be safe/possible to drive through Sudan from Ethiopia to Egypt on motorbikes. I understand the newspapers paint a bleak image of Sudan, but I'm always sceptical of…

Februari'15, I went for two weeks to Ethiopia. My objective was to discover the Northern circuit, including a 4-day trek into the Simien Mountains. Finding the right tour operator who could fulfill my detailed itinerary was not easy. Some tour operators did not reply at all, but at the end I selected ETT Travel out of three tour operators. ETT Travel was willing to fulfill my personal wishes at a very competitive price (some tour operators really think that they can squeeze your wallet).
My…

Trip Report

Me
Solo female traveller of East Asian descent, in mid-20s.

Getting here
Bus from Khartoum to Gallabat (SDG 115, extra charge by weight for luggage, ~SDG 50 for a 10kg backpack)

The bus typically reaches Gallabat after the border with Ethiopia has closed and so requires a night's stay in Gallabat in a lokanda (~SDG15-25). Place was filthy, with many biting insects, but it's the only choice. Separated into male and female dorms. Lokanda serves Ethiopian food and sells drinks.

Note that your…

I am looking to arrive at Addis Ababa just after midnight and was hoping for some advice on the best way into the city, reasonable (cheap) hotels it might be worth booking into and generally what the sensible thing to do is!

Last november I had a fantastic trekking experience in the ethiopian highlands, five days of hiking and camping in the beautiful Simien mountains national park. Before going to Ethiopia I contacted Alebachew (Alex) to have a quotation and organize things in advance as I had no flexibility with my dates. I did shop around, as always, and Alex had very competitive prices and good reviews. I can now confirm that he and his team deserve those good reviews. His small team offers a flawless service…
