It's totally possible to move around Ethiopia without using a tour company.
You can use one if you choose to do that but the DIY is possible.
It's only for the Danakil and the Omo that you can't travel there by yourself and need to use a travel agency.

The weather is not a problem in the South in Augustus.

The painted tribes are painted for tourists. You pay for each picture.
Some people are drunk, they can be agressive.
A zoo, it's a human zoo.

The South part of Ethiopia is not only the Omo. You have many more places to visit.
Try to read the Bradt guidebook, it's the "bible" for the independent traveller.
