I am planning a trip to Ethiopia in January. To be able to use the internet while travelling is very important for me. I read from the news that the internet connections across the country since the beginning(10/9) of the state emergency have been very unreliable. Could some one travelling in the country lately update the current internet situation? How about the mobile internet?

Thanks very much!

Hi Kang1013,

Glad you have decided to come to Ethiopia, irrespective of the media coverage on the security situation. As a tour operator (I will try to remain objective here), I can tell you that the security situation is more peaceful than many Western countries.

That said, mobile internet is still unavailable. However, you can access the internet from WIFI connections which are accessible in almost all hotels and some cafes. Alternatively, you can use internet cafes, which are dirt-cheap (almost free :) ) in the absence of WIFI. I am writing this email from a landline internet connection in my office. You are welcome here too :)

Hi myGuzo,
Thanks for the reply. No I am not worried about safety. In fact, I visited Ethiopia once two years ago. I traveled the northern circuit. Next time, I want to visit Harar, Danakil, and maybe some tribes in the south. During my first visit, I bought a mobile USB stick for my laptop to do my work, and it worked really well. As you said, the internet connections in big cities are mostly fine, but I think I still need mobile connections while I am on the road, especially when I am travelling in rural areas, even small towns. What do you think about the chances that in January, the government might resume the mobile internet services? It really doesn't make much sense to shut it down in the first place. Kang

They have lifted some restrictions already. At this rate, you could be lucky with mobile internet for January.

Thanks. Please let me know when the government completely lifts the bans on mobile internet services. Then I can start planning my trip.

Sure. Where is your website?

You can use WIFI like myGuzo remarked, but nearly all social networks, free web-mail services and many news sites are blocked. Even the homepage of Ethiopian Airlines is blocked...

Hi schmechi,

Thanks for the information. I tried to start a conversation thru Skype to a friend in Adigrad, Ethiopia the other day; it seemed to be connected OK but there was no response from my friend. Maybe because Skype was actually blocked without users knowing it.

Kang
