My wife and I are planning to spend 3 weeks in Ethiopia (late December to mid-January 2008-2009). We would like to divide our time between the Historic Route and the Tribes of the South. There are many outfitters, based Ethiopia, UK and US. Does anyone has first-hand experience with an outfitter who has arranged this type of trip? Any recommendations or warnings?

I am currently looking at: Wild Frontiers, Footloose Adventures, Red Jackel Tours, Grand Holidays Ethiopia Travel, Imaginative Traveller and Lost Frontiers.

Thank you

Hi, I had a good experience with Imaganitive Traveller a few years ago on a trip to Egypt, they left us to do our own thing a lot of the time aswell which was pretty good.

I would recommend SORA Tours, same based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In addition to my personal excellent experience with them, numerous other satisfied travellers have posted their good times with them, most recent postings being just a month ago. You can visit their site at www.soratours.com.

Look in the Ethiopia section here for recommendations.
Sora tours have a good reputation from TT although i haven't used them myself.

Three weeks is a time frame that generally only covers the Northern circuit.
You will need to fly between some towns to make up time. Flights are about USD125 one way.
Take public transport if you can between Gondar and Axum (if you visit), Its just sensational.

Be aware most flights leave mid morning so they sort of stuff up the full day.

Cheers.

My wife and I used Sora tours for a two week trip to the Omo. They were excellant in every way. They helped us plan our trip, picked us up at the airport, shopped for us, and even checked in with us regularly while we travelled independently for another four weeks. Abel our driver was not only an excellant guide, he became a friend. Feel free to contact me with any specific questions. Pat

I would try Abeba Tours. They set up a nice trip to the south for us (and I know they do the north as well.) From what I hear, they've just set up a new office inside the Ras Hotel, which is central Addis Ababa.

Couldn't recommend Ethiopia Quadrants highly enough - just back from a 3 week trip with them - check out their website www.ethiopianquadrants.com.

Great local guides and safe drivers.

Hi,
We are just returning from a wonderful 21 days trip organized by Grand Holidays Ethiopia Tours to the Historic Route and Omo Valley of Ethiopia. Our tour guide Terry and our driver Wosen were so wonderful. Every thing was well organized and we had nothing to worry about. I know they will make your trip to Ethiopia as enjoyable as ours was.
John.
