Harar
I truely detested it. I was on my own and I found it to be aggresive and scary and nasty.
The Tewedos (sp?) hotel is hideous dirty and stinky
Dont eat any food there
The receptionist/guide is a dollar sucking leech who hovered constantly outisde my room and kept changing prices.
Dire Dawa
It gets a slating in the Bradt guide...each to their own.
I loved it - it has a beguiling charm where you can just wander around and relax.
I also like Mitto coffee shop for its decor and hamburgers (and I dont usually like hamburgers!)
The town closes down on Sunday afternoon.
I stayed at the Ras which is shabby 1960s but bags of unique charm and a lovely garden.
Across the road is the posh Samrat hotel which only charges about 35US for a single and 45US gets you a suite.
Great service, great restaurant and a pool.. you seriously want a taste of luxury..this is the place.
TRAIN to Djibouti
lovely photogenic journey...comfy seats in first class - the carriage needs a good scrubbing and scouring and it would be quite nice
It took too long 14 hours...but my chums went by bus and that took 16 and was uncomfortable
easy to get tickets 93birr first class.... take plenty of food and water.
Djibouti border asking for Yellow Fever certificate
