I was wondering about that word as well, and during my recent trip through Ethiopia I asked several local people as to the pronounciation and the origin.

Supposedly it is more or less pronounced "faranj" or "feranj", but definitely without the "i" at the end (as I have seen written very often).

The origin supposedly refers to the French; the people in Eritrea coined a word that refers to the Italians.
