Hello all,

Is there's anyone out there who's thinking about traveling around Ethiopia in Nov/Dec this year.

I'm looking for travel companions for some gentle hiking in the Simian Mountains, visiting the tribes in the south, and taking in the historical sights such as Aksum in the north. I've read sharing costs for scouts/guides is the way to go around national parks and it's also possible to get better rates for tours too so here I am. Easy going, cheerful-especially on holiday- practical, fit enough to walk around for 5/6 hours, great cook, and guaranteed not to smoke all your cigarettes.

All the best,

K

This is the tourist season in Ethiopia and most would do a Simien trek.
You will find travelling companions easily.
Bank on at least 3 weeks doing the northern circuit and at least a week down south.
Most travellers travel clockwise from Addis if they are doing the full circuit so you will have a better chance of meeting companions.
Bring a cheap alarm clock to wake you up for early morning bus trips if you are going public transport.

cheers and good luck.

Thanks for that !!
I had no idea I would need 3 weeks for the north. I'll have to make do with 2 weeks max.
Do you have any idea how I would be received if I bought a metal detector with me discreetly-but not concealed. Would I have to apply for a permit from a ministry or something ?
Cheers,
K

Ehthiopia is at war with just about every neighbouring country around it.
They won't take kindly with a tourist turning up on their doorstep with a metal detector.
You could apply for a permit but don't hold your breath.
Cheers.

I can't really make the connection between metal detectors and warfare- other than mine clearing- but OK. In the circumstances it's probably safer not to indulge in activities that might raise suspicions.
Cheers.

Dare we ask the purpose of a metal detector?

Would you ask the purpose of taking a camera too ? Take a guess and try not to use your imagination.

I really don't want to get off topic here.

I'm looking for travel companions. Not inane conversation.

Thanks..
