Hi there,

Just wondering, our LP states that there are no ATM's in Ethiopia. Is this still the case? We are planning to travel overland from Egypt through Sudan to Ethiopia. Does this mean we will have to carry enough money from Egypt to get us all the way to Kenya? That would be one big stack of money. Are there ATM's in Gonder or Bahir Dar yet? If you take $20 per day as a rough average and think that this trip could take around a month, thats $600 each person will need. Any ideas as to how to get around this?

Well, you can use visa cards at the Dashan bank ATMs in Addis, I think even Mastercard is accepted in at least one branch... $20 is a reasonable budget, but I would bring at least enough to cover all the expenses in the north before you reach Addis, as I'm not sure if you can withdraw money so easily in Gondor or Bahir Dar.

I agree with the previous poster: in ADDIS you can use your cc to withdraw money at some banks but I never saw any usable ATMs ... I met tourists who were trying to track some down ... not sure if they had any luck. Also not sure what your success will be like outside of Addis. I would bring either cash or traveller's checks (but keep your receipt ... they were always asking for it though the commercial bank branches never required it).

There are some ATM's. Go to the Hilton or Sheraton, or Wabe Shebele hotels, and pray that they are working. Outside Addis, I am sure there are none. You survive on $20 a day, but you may be limitig yourselves. And if you want to fly to get around, you will need alot more than that. Be sure to keep ALL your exchange receipts. Those cock suckers at customs took $1000 of mine that I did not have declarations forms for.

Hi,

I am not quite sure if ATMs exist in Gondar and Bahir Dar. The ATM at the Piazza branch of Dashen Bank shows 19 ATMs in Addis in the start menu - don't know if all these ATMs are in service. I only tried this ATM with my VISA card and never had a problem. Sheraton has also an ATM.

If you don't have your traveller cheque receipts try the Dashen Bank. It is the only bank where I could exchange my TCs without a receipt.

Bye and have fun

hi there are definitely ATMs in both gondar & bahir dar. Look for the Dashen bank by the roundabout in Bahir Dar & just up the hill from the piazza in gondar. i used visa card, can't remember if they took mastercard but probably you could withdraw $$ over the counter at the bank itself. Have a great trip!
