As advised by most people on here,best to do say 3 weeks in Ethiopia and a week in Somaliland.
A few points.
a. Get the Bradt guide to Ethiopia - 6th edition and get Bradt Guide to Somaliland as separate book.
b Get a multi entry visa to Ethiopia before you go.
c. Be aware you get a big discount on domestic flights if you fly in on Ethiopian Airlines.

The northern circuit can be done without a tour company. For more details and advice keep on asking on here.

Also go on Tripadvisor Ethiopia Forum. and look at Bradt Guide Ethiopia Updates pages which is mainly trip reports not questions.
